April 23-25, 2013. We love the concept of a show titled “Affordable Meetings”; it seems to make the assumption that most meetings are UN-affordable. Actually the official show title is “HSMAI’s Mid-America MEET”, and it’s all about meetings, events, education and technology. Organized by the Hospitality Sales and Marketing Association International (HSMAI), the 2013 MEET Mid-America attracted 800 planning professionals from organizations of every size, plus 100 exhibitors representing hotels, resorts, inns, convention and visitors bureaus, technology suppliers, plus food and equipment providers. There were comprehensive educational programs, so that planners from novice to executive level could hone their skills and develop new ones with hands-on learning. Case studies and practical demonstrations got learners out of their seats and into real-life applications, giving them take-away tips, tools, and techniques for better meetings. Apparently it’s about “meeting” expectations…
January 18-20, 2013. This was the New York Times’ tenth anniversary of hosting the Travel Show, and quite an international celebration it turned out to be. Five cultural stages (for Asia, Europe, Latin America, the Caribbean and Global (i.e. rest-of-the-world) featured live performances and culinary presentations from exotic locations everywhere. “Global” turned out to include America’s Everglades National Park and Universal Orlando Resort where, we were reliably informed, you can “Be Courageous, Be Outrageous, and Be Extraordinary”. Industry professionals milled around along with the general public, to a get closer look at domestic and international hot spots, familiar favorites, and esoteric under-the-radar escape destinations that are still relatively crowd-free. Pyongyang, anyone?
Sept. 11-13, 2012. HD means Hospitality Design. The show is where designers, architects, owners, operators, developers and specifiers can see the best hospitality design products and services offered by artisans and manufacturers from around the world. Hospitality Design Boutique Exposition & Conference (HD Boutique) tries to differentiate itself from other industry shows with a distinct style and unusual venue, creating “a more personal and intimate” event (read comparatively small, but perfectly formed) which encourages networking with the most influential and exclusive hospitality owners, operators and design professionals. Visitors can “build relationships, discover new products and learn from the leading minds in the industry”. This show is billed as a unique hospitality experience, and you get to see bedding, lighting, decor, furniture etc. Hey, you lolling on the recliner, wake up….
Beach Howe Tower Vancouver BC Vancouver, BC is a world class city, tucked into the far West region of Canada. Long a gateway to the travelers going to Japan, Singapore & China, Vancouver sports a cosmopolitan lifestyle with old world influences. The variety of architecture ranges from totems by indigenous peoples who once thrived on what is now canyons of brick, steel & stone to Art Deco of the 1920′s to today current trend to build mix use buildings for an urban work, live, play lifestyle.
The Beach + Howe Building is just that. The triangular base is reset from the street and includes office & retail space. As the building rises, offsets are made to maximize both city views and limiting the amount of exhaust that travels upward from the Granville bridge. The Beach + Howe Building is designed by copenhagen-based studio BIG architects.
Once it opens, the Beach + Howe building will be Vanouver’s 4th tallest and largest residential complex. To read more about it, here is the Arch Daily, an online ezine for architects complete with specs and Design Boom with more renderings and perspective.
Apr. 1-4, 2012. NIGA is the Indian Gaming Trade Show and Convention. The National Indian Gaming Association’s Gaming Tradeshow and Convention is the nation’s premier Indian gaming event, the place where Indian gaming executives, buyers and industry professionals meet each spring to conduct serious business. Anyone currently doing business in or wanting to begin doing business in the Indian casino-entertainment industry can’t afford to miss being a part of the Indian gaming industry’s number one event. More than 400 exhibitors representing 49 states, 7 Canadian provinces and 6 countries filled the 90,000-square-foot San Diego Convention Center, and 5,000 guests made their way to this land-based gaming show. The week was filled with golf tournaments, roundtables, conferences, award ceremonies, business networking and training. No, that was no smoke signal, that was a Cuban cigar…
