GSK 2016: The Linkedin Influencer Event

GSK16_linkedIn While It isn’t for everyone – by invite only – it mostly consisted of 22-32 yr olds listening to 45 yr olds tell them what is the next big thing in business, social media, disruption techniques, etc.  Just as a note: people over 45 – actually have MONEY to spend.  how many 24 yr olds do outside of Silicon Valley?

As a member of traditional media, I was excluded from some of the closed events like the impromptu “blogger” news meet up. While I understand totally their disdain for “old” media since we’ve done such a crappy job of covering actual news and most of the networks have become one long infomercial for the presidential candidate that shall not be named in case he manifests, we can still report what is news worthy and what is just a fad.

The problem with the Linkedin model is while it is the best platform for business, they fail to differentiate between a lone person on a job hunt (at 29.00/month to be a premium member) and someone who has a job – therefore income and can afford the 29.00 a month. So there are 1000’s that are left behind – once again.

My takeaways from this event:

  • If you are an intern – you get to do social media and get paid to attend this conference while still making less than what one pair of shoes the paid speaker is wearing.
  • The Aria is still a beautiful hotel but their convention space leaves a lot to be desired.
  • The trade show area was mostly apps and analytics

The parties were worth the time it took to schlep from valet to the trade show area.

Las Vegas – SEMA 2015 – Automotive Week 2015

The SEMA Show, we were told, is pretty much the biggest automotive specialty products trade event in the world. This year like others, it apparently drew the industry’s brightest minds and hottest products to the Las Vegas Convention Center. As part of the AAIW, the SEMA Show attracts more than 100,000 industry leaders from more than 100 countries, all searching for profit opportunities in the automotive, truck and SUV, powersports, and RV markets. SEMA Show drew big numbers of both domestic and international buyers. The displays were segmented into twelve sections, and a New Products Showcase featured nearly 2,000 newly introduced parts, tools and components. In addition, the SEMA Show provided attendees with educational seminars, product demonstrations and special events. Delegates were reminded frequently that being there would put them “ahead of the curve”… So that explains some of the curvy-type people manning the booths… #sema2015

Atlanta: Fresh Summit 2015

Fresh Summit is the event where produce and floral industry leaders from around the world converge to share ideas, breakthroughs and inspiration. No other single conference in the produce industry, we heard, helps create global connections, cultivate industry talent, or find practical solutions to complex science and technology issues. Florally-minded delegates could explore a floral pavilion double its size from previous years, and ensure they were on the cutting-edge of tomorrow’s trends. With more than 18,000 people participating, Fresh Summit enabled eager horticulturalists to anticipate change, identify emerging trends and profit from new opportunities, since PMA’s connections reach across the supply chain and around the world, attracting the best of today’s decision-makers, and tomorrow’s game changers. It’s a flower-power thing…. #freshproduce
We had the privilege of meeting some great folks like the ones at Sun-Rich Fresh Fruit – where they demo’d how they capture that fresh fruit flavor we find at our grocery stores!

Trade Shows: Las Vegas – CTIA Super Mobility Expo

The CTIA Show went by “Super Mobility”, meaning that from apps to social media promotion, this here was the technology for folks on the move. CTIA Super Mobility 2015 claimed to be the largest and most influential forum in the Americas focused specifically on mobile innovation in all its disruptive glory. Powered by CTIA The Wireless Association, this springboard event brought together more than 35,000 professionals from all across the new mobile landscape to experience the leading edge (actually they said “bleeding-edge”, but hey…) technology that is driving and enabling the connected life. So, whether you were on the lookout for the products that consumers want right now, or the new technology for tomorrow’s big breakthrough, they wanted you to remember that “this was one place where being in over your head is a beautiful thing”. You said mobile? Okay, so MOVE it…. #SuperMobility

Phoenix: APWA 2015 Congress & Expo

APWA is the American Public Works Association, and the APWA International Public Works Congress & Exposition has always drawn thousands of public works professionals from all over the world. When it comes to public works, one size apparently does not fit all, so defining the term can be problematic. Even APWA members have trouble arriving at a common definition; because of the multi-faceted, ever-evolving nature of public works, we may never arrive at a comprehensive idea of what PW quintessentially is. Yet Public Works is the heartbeat of any city, developing and maintaining buildings, roads, water systems, solid waste handling and administration. The people who work in PW are solving some of the toughest problems faced by our communities, our country, and our world. The gathering also provides public works departments with much-needed community outreach resources. There were more than 125 technical and professional development sessions presented by experts and industry vendors. The thing about Public Works? Well, when you do it in Public, it has to Work…. #APWAExpo #PWX

Las Vegas Trade Shows: International Parking Institute #IPI2015

IPI is the International Parking Institute, and the IPI Conference & Expo is the world’s largest educational and networking event for parking and transportation professionals. Thousands of attendees gathered for four days of meetings, keynotes, leadership discussions, networking, awards, special events, tours of parking facilities — the definition of a thrill? You haven’t lived till you’ve experienced one of these tours of parking facilities — and an exhibit hall with more than 250 exhibitors. A revolution is driving the parking industry thanks to new approaches in the design, management, and operation of public and private parking. Smarter approaches to parking can improve urban mobility, reduce congestion and enhance sustainability. Government officials, architects, urban planners, transportation officials, suppliers, consultants, and economic decision-makers were all there to feed their magnetic tickets into the slot. Hey, sir, excuse me… sir… sir? You cannot park there… #IPI2015

Chicago: IBTM America – Let’s Go!

So where’s the meeting? IBTM is strictly for those involved in organizing meetings, incentives and events. IBTM America was a three day event that blew (and we mean blew) into Chicago, the Windy City, in June 2015. IBTM America was an exclusive event that hosted 250 premier planners from the domestic and overseas markets, all clamoring to place international and domestic business. Not just anybody gets into this kind of meeting, though; this is an exclusive and private event where exhibitors and premier meeting planners have been carefully selected on criteria of industry relevance, expertise and the kind — and size — of business they have to place, resulting in an “ideal 1 to 1 ratio”. Tailored to the U.S. market, but focused as much on points beyond, this show guarantees the attendance of top-level decision makers from across the U.S. and other key markets. Hey, a little hush please? The meeting only finishes when I smack the lectern with this gavel….. #ibtmamerica
