San Diego: CCCA

Dec: 3-6, 2012. The Christian Camp and Conference Association (CCCA) told us as soon as we arrived that they were “strong and courageous”.  Presumably they expected their delegates, too, to live up to that noble description.  Executive directors, directors, board members, managers and staff at Christian camps, conference and retreat centers all benefited from the education, training, exhibits, networking, fellowship and spiritual refreshment at the CCCA 2012 National Conference. With deeper and broader educational offerings, all members in camp or conference center ministry found value in the new Intensives, Institutes and Electives at this year’s conference.  Those new to camp ministry got the benefit of foundational level Institute seminars. Nobody “camped it up”….

San Diego: WCWA – Western Carwash

Sept. 18-20, 2012. They gathered to “be a part of the excitement at the largest regional carwash show”, also rated the best regional carwash show in the country. On their minds were weighty issues such as Entitlements, Architectural & Engineering, Special Studies (Noise, Traffic, Environmental, etc.), Fees & Assessments, Site Hard and Soft Scapes, Signage, Building & Canopy Costs, Conveyor Education, Equipment (Wash Equipment, Vacuums, Computers, Miscellaneous), and Hidden Costs.  The idea was being put about that carwash concerns could “increase their marketing dollars with other companies in the marketplace and industry”. How could they band together as an industry and do a “got milk” style campaign?  Interesting concept.  What would the tagline be?  ”Got suds”?

San Diego: IACP

Sept. 29 – Oct. 3, 2012. To give it the full name, this was The International Association of Chiefs of Police Conference and Law Enforcement Education and Technology Exhibition.  Wait, wouldn’t that make it IACPCLEETE?  And not just IACP?  Maybe police chiefs just like their acronyms short and snappy.  Secretary of the Department of Homeland Security Janet Napolitano commented that American law enforcement was still at a crossroads in how we approach our nation’s security, facing new and increasingly complex threats.  She further observed that in the past four years great strides have been made to break down barriers between law enforcement entities and create new systems for information sharing, because those threats “required us to fundamentally recast how the Federal government works with our state, local, tribal, and territorial law enforcement partners.”  Short and snappy enough for you…?

San Diego: AAOMS

Sept. 10-15, 2012. Okay, try to say this with wads of cotton-wool stuffed in your cheeks:  ”American Association of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons”.  Not so easy, right?  Nor is what they do.  Turns out these people are the specialist surgeons who  care for patients with problem wisdom teeth, facial pain, and misaligned jaws. They treat accident victims suffering facial injuries, place dental implants, care for patients with oral cancer, tumors and cysts of the jaws, and perform facial cosmetic surgery.  Their advanced training in anesthesia allows them to provide quality care with maximum patient comfort and safety.  AAOMS is the professional organization representing more than 9,000 oral and maxillofacial surgeons in the United States, and it supports its members’ ability to practice their specialty through education, research, and advocacy.  Okay, take out the cotton wool, but you still have to say “American Association of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons” with a straight face…

San Diego: Emergency Nurses Association (ENA)

Sept. 11-13, 2012. ENA is the Emergency Nurses Association, and they believe in “safe practice, safe care”.  If you were there, you would typically be a staff nurse or manager in an emergency department, an administrator, prehospital-, pediatric- or trauma emergency-nurse, an emergency clinical nurse specialist, nurse practitioner, student or educator.  This event was largely about education, and delegates heard how standards of emergency nursing practice have been developed to integrate competencies and standards of excellence. These standards delineate the role and function of the emergency nurse, enhance the quality and consistency of emergency nursing care, and provide criteria to evaluate the quality of emergency nursing practice.  The association “nurses” candidates through the courses till they’re ready to “practice”…
