GSK 2016: The Linkedin Influencer Event

GSK16_linkedIn While It isn’t for everyone – by invite only – it mostly consisted of 22-32 yr olds listening to 45 yr olds tell them what is the next big thing in business, social media, disruption techniques, etc.  Just as a note: people over 45 – actually have MONEY to spend.  how many 24 yr olds do outside of Silicon Valley?

As a member of traditional media, I was excluded from some of the closed events like the impromptu “blogger” news meet up. While I understand totally their disdain for “old” media since we’ve done such a crappy job of covering actual news and most of the networks have become one long infomercial for the presidential candidate that shall not be named in case he manifests, we can still report what is news worthy and what is just a fad.

The problem with the Linkedin model is while it is the best platform for business, they fail to differentiate between a lone person on a job hunt (at 29.00/month to be a premium member) and someone who has a job – therefore income and can afford the 29.00 a month. So there are 1000’s that are left behind – once again.

My takeaways from this event:

  • If you are an intern – you get to do social media and get paid to attend this conference while still making less than what one pair of shoes the paid speaker is wearing.
  • The Aria is still a beautiful hotel but their convention space leaves a lot to be desired.
  • The trade show area was mostly apps and analytics

The parties were worth the time it took to schlep from valet to the trade show area.

Trade Shows: Las Vegas – CTIA Super Mobility Expo

The CTIA Show went by “Super Mobility”, meaning that from apps to social media promotion, this here was the technology for folks on the move. CTIA Super Mobility 2015 claimed to be the largest and most influential forum in the Americas focused specifically on mobile innovation in all its disruptive glory. Powered by CTIA The Wireless Association, this springboard event brought together more than 35,000 professionals from all across the new mobile landscape to experience the leading edge (actually they said “bleeding-edge”, but hey…) technology that is driving and enabling the connected life. So, whether you were on the lookout for the products that consumers want right now, or the new technology for tomorrow’s big breakthrough, they wanted you to remember that “this was one place where being in over your head is a beautiful thing”. You said mobile? Okay, so MOVE it…. #SuperMobility

Las Vegas Trade Shows: International Parking Institute #IPI2015

IPI is the International Parking Institute, and the IPI Conference & Expo is the world’s largest educational and networking event for parking and transportation professionals. Thousands of attendees gathered for four days of meetings, keynotes, leadership discussions, networking, awards, special events, tours of parking facilities — the definition of a thrill? You haven’t lived till you’ve experienced one of these tours of parking facilities — and an exhibit hall with more than 250 exhibitors. A revolution is driving the parking industry thanks to new approaches in the design, management, and operation of public and private parking. Smarter approaches to parking can improve urban mobility, reduce congestion and enhance sustainability. Government officials, architects, urban planners, transportation officials, suppliers, consultants, and economic decision-makers were all there to feed their magnetic tickets into the slot. Hey, sir, excuse me… sir… sir? You cannot park there… #IPI2015

Trade Shows Las Vegas: ReCon 2015 #ReCon2015

The International Council of Shopping Centers (ICSC) is all about advancing the shopping center industry and to promoting its role in the commercial distribution of consumer goods and services.  Recon is their Global Retail Real Estate Convention, and a fine platform for explaining why things are going well for the business;  for instance the industry as a whole has been thriving and “only going up”. In 2014 the average value of shopping center construction ($14.5 billion), occupancy rates (92.7%) and rent (+ 6.5%) all soared to record-breaking highs since 2008. Shopping center NOI (that’s Net Operating Income to us acronym ignoramuses)  also experienced a record growth rate (+8.3%) since 2000.  Mall sales productivity per square foot was up from $385 dollars in 2009 to over $475.  Based on U.S. Census Bureau data, the value of shopping center construction, including work done on both new and/or existing structures, reached $14.5 billion in 2014, the highest since 2008. The recession?  It’s just so over…  #ICSC2015 #ReCon2015

Las Vegas: National Association of Broadcasters – NAB2015

The media and entertainment industry, we heard, just got itself “unleashed”. Dynamic innovation and cutting-edge technologies were shattering content boundaries and opening up opportunities, since NABShow was apparently the place to break free from conventional thinking and open everyone’s minds. Attendees representing every sector of the industry including Broadcast, Digital Media, Film, Entertainment, Telecom, Post-Production, Academia, Houses of Worship (really!) , Advertising, Military, Government, Retail, Security, Sports, Live Events, Online Video, IT, Virtual and Augmented Reality all converged on Las Vegas to embrace the immersive experiences reshaping the new reality of media. The show organizers were there to insist that “This Changes Everything”, and they were piling on the innovative attractions to prove it. Hey, may I say you’re looking particularly unleashed today…. #NABShow
