Nov. 4-7, 2012. International Test Conference (ITC) is, we understand, the world’s premier conference dedicated to the electronic testing of devices, boards and systems, covering the complete cycle from design verification, test, diagnosis, failure analysis and back to process and design improvement. At ITC, test and design professionals can confront the challenges the industry faces, and learn how these challenges are being addressed by the combined efforts of academia, design tool and equipment suppliers, designers, and test engineers. ITC is known around the world for its robust technical dialog. Over the course of the event, respected researchers, academics and industry experts presented the results of their work and applied knowledge on a variety of topics for test and design engineers and practitioners. Just as well, since these are “testing times”…
Aug. 26-31, 2012. APWA is the American Public Works Association, and Anaheim was playing host to the International Public Works Congress and Exhibition. Public Works, we learned, is the heartbeat of any city, developing and maintaining buildings, roads, water systems, solid waste handling and administration. The people who work in public works are solving “some of the toughest problems faced by our communities, our country, and our world”. The member roster of 28,000 forms the backbone of the public works APWA network. They are primarily from North America, but members can be found on all continents. They plan, build, manage and maintain billions of dollars worth of public infrastructure. Okay, so you want to work… in public works? Works for me….
Aug. 5-10, 2012. Share says it’s about “Technology, Connections, Results”. The branches of the IT industries dealt with at this show included application architecture development and integration, communications infrastructure, network management and security, virtualization, storage, data center management, and much besides. Seminar attendees learned about Cloud and Big Data driving IT transformation. A general session looked at Crossing the Generations Divide: Leveraging the Power of the Generations for Your Strategic Advantage. Even the daddy products like mainframe computers got a look-in, with a session on Ensuring Mainframe Viability — 30 Minutes on Mainframe Modernization, and another on how to Attract Your Next Generation of Mainframe Developers. Sounds like a kind of IT dating agency….
Aug. 12-14, 2012. To give it its full title, this was the Western Foodservice and Hospitality Expo, and it was a comprehensive industry event devoted to the Western U.S. restaurant, foodservice and hospitality market. On offer were thousands of new foods products from hundreds of exhibiting companies and dozens of exciting special events and educational programs. Special event highlights included celebrity chefs doing culinary demonstrations. The Food Trends Experience was a tasting adventure showcasing the products, flavors and ingredients driving the most recent trends in the market — healthy, organic, sustainable, ethnic, artisanal, etc. Foodservice professionals crowded in to discover and learn about the new culinary innovations. Expo Comida Latina, the Hispanic/Latino Food & Beverage trade event, was a particularly spicy add-on. Calabash-flower tacos, anyone?
June 21-26, 2012. ALA is the American Library Association. This meet claims to be the world’s largest event for the library community, bringing together more than 25,000 librarians, educators, authors, publishers, literacy experts, illustrators and the leading suppliers to the market. The ALA Annual Conference gave visitors an opportunity to advance careers and improve libraries. Best-selling author John Irving (“The World According to Garp”) introduced the ALA Annual Conference attendees to his thirteenth and latest novel, “In One Person”, published in May 2012. The novel is described as his most political since “The Cider House Rules” and “A Prayer for Owen Meany”, offering a moving portrait of the solitariness of a bisexual man dedicated to making himself “worthwhile.” Bet you didn’t know that Irving competed as a wrestler for 20 years, coached the sport until he was 47, and was inducted in 1992 into the National Wrestling Hall of Fame? So better don’t antagonize this guy…
May 30-31, 2012. AMW12 also went by the name of HSMAI’s Meet West, and it was all about meetings, events, education and technology. The event attracted planners from all sectors of the meetings industry looking for resources to enhance their meetings and events. Attendees were typically meeting professionals including corporate, independents, and association planners. Exhibitors were mostly hotels, inns, resorts, convention centers, airlines, conference centers, transportation companies, trade publications, unique meeting sites, software providers, entertainment companies, event rental companies, audio visual companies and other suppliers who service the meetings industry. We need to arrange meetings about meetings…
May 16-18, 2012. This is a two-in-one show, combining the Southern California Facilities Expo and Managing Green Buildings, jointly sponsored by the International Facility Management Association of Orange County, the Northwest Energy Efficiency Council, and the University of California-Irvine. Also featured is a “Secured Facilities” seminar presented by SecurityInfoWatch.com, Security Technology Executive magazine and Security Dealer & Integrator magazine. Topics on people’s minds included restoration or replacement? – options for repairing and preserving a wide range of assets, and water conservation guidelines for Southern California facilities, not to mention energy savings through energy recovery ventilation, a cost-saving strategy for meeting ventilation and energy standards while improving indoor air quality and reducing energy waste. So… this show is the greenest green it’s ever been…
