Las Vegas: Expo!Expo!

The International Association of Exhibitions and Events is today the leading association for the global exhibition industry. IAEE represents over 9,000 individuals in over 50 countries who conduct and support exhibitions around the world, and IAEE proclaims that “Exhibitions and Events mean business”. Their show goes by Expo! Expo!, and IAEE’s Annual Meeting & Exhibition brought together organizers and industry suppliers for their mutual benefit through exhibition, education and networking events. The focus of Expo! Expo! was, we heard, to create a learning culture and strategic networking opportunities. To that end, the 2015 Expo! Expo! Connect platform leveraged state-of-art networking and matchmaking technology, to get everyone talking. Just a big gabfest, then? Deep down, this was a big-talking industry making an exhibition of itself…. #ExpoExpo

Las Vegas – PMMI – PackExpo 2015

Founded in 1933, PMMI, The Association for Packaging and Processing Technologies, is a trade association made up of more than 700 member companies that manufacture packaging, processing and packaging-related converting machinery, commercially-available packaging machinery components, containers and materials, all across NAFTA markets the United States, Canada and Mexico. PMMI claims to be the leading global resource for processing and packaging issues. Its mission is to improve and promote its members’ success in a global packaging marketplace, and PMMI members are the industry-leading solutions providers in the processing and packaging supply chain. If all that sounds overly serious, remember the PMMI Foundation Golf Tournament at the Bali Hai Golf Club, Las Vegas, which raised $40,000 in support of education. You see this tube of golf balls? Nice packaging…

Portland: FarWest 2015

Well, why WOULDN’T they call it “The Biggest Show In The West”? FarWest Show was the quintessential gathering for the nurseryman (and nurserywoman…. no no, nothing to do with babysitting little kids or pre-school education), providing everything you come to expect from a green industry expo This was the show at which to discover new nursery- and retail-focused products, equipment and services, find new popular plant varieties and network with thousands of top industry professionals in the heart of nursery country. Edibles, we learned, are all the rage; consumers have been installing raised beds, planting vegetable gardens and getting in on the “grow-your-own” movement. Vegetables were hot, as breakthroughs in breeding have indicated, but consumers seem to be demanding more — and going beyond just growing their own. This year’s Growers Showcase highlighted all of the “Edible Delights” that have been getting ’em salivating in today’s garden industry. Hot vegetables, you say? Appetizing…. #FarWest2015

Trade Shows: Portland – BrewExpo America 2015

Hey, listen, I’ll buy you a beer in Portland.  BrewExpo America is the premier trade show for Craft Brewers, and it claims to be the only industry event that serves brewpubs, breweries, and wholesalers alike.  With 600 vendors all in one location, BrewExpo is foamy, thirst-quenching kind of a place to shop for products and services for brewery or brewpub. The trade expo is geared to providing a show environment that allows exhibitors and buyers to work on profitable business relationships, and helps brewing and brewery restaurant professionals encounter the latest and best products and services industry vendors have to offer. The conference is quite the social event, with 10,000+ brewing industry professionals enjoying craft brews together.  In fact we challenge you to point a camera there at any time in any direction and fail to get a shot with less than two people with beer glass in hand.  Cheers!  #craftbeer #cheers

Boston: New England Food Show – NEFS

NEFS stands for the New England Food Show.  Sponsored by the Massachusetts Restaurant Association and supported by other New England state restaurant, retail, hospitality and specialty food associations, NEFS is the region’s largest and most attended trade show for retail food and foodservice buyers and professionals.  Delegates were typically those who influence buying decisions or purchase products for retail markets, supermarkets, distribution, institutional foodservice or large or small restaurants.  At NEFS they could find everything needed to satisfy existing customers, attract new ones, and grow the bottom line.  From interactive education and culinary competitions on the main stage to industry-expert-led info sessions addressing marketing and operational needs, the food buzz was pervasive.  We counted 350+ exhibitors, many offering wine and beer tastings among the culinary delights.  Cheers!

Anaheim: North American Association of Food Equipment Mfg. – NAFEM

NAFEM is the North American Association of Food Equipment Manufacturing, a trade association of 500+ foodservice equipment and supplies manufacturers providing products for food preparation, cooking, storage and table service.  Over 60 years and more, NAFEM has established itself as a foodservice industry leader, equipping members to succeed with a variety of products and services, representing the industry in Washington and supporting programs and organizations that move the industry forward. NAFEM offers educational opportunities to ensure that the next generation of young professionals is prepared for the foodservice industry’s future direction,  staying on the cutting edge of current trends and emerging issues to provide the industry with leadership and expertise.  The organizers have been moving ahead to develop messaging around “Why the foodservice industry?” Interesting question… though most people here would’ve said “What’s not to like?”

Atlanta: IPPE – International Production & Processing Expo

IPPE is the International Production & Processing Expo, which sounds kind of non-specific, but actually has a lot to do with meat.  And chicken.  See, International Poultry Expo, International Feed Expo and International Meat Expo all integrated their tradeshows in 2013, under the umbrella name (do chickens carry umbrellas?) of International Production & Processing Expo. The 2015 IPPE pulled together more than 1,100 exhibitors and over 25,000 attendees in Atlanta.  With significant increases in food production needed over the next few decades to support a growing population, we heard, agricultural industries need to learn to communicate more specifically and unambiguously with stakeholders, customers, and others about their sustainability programs, or so thought Dr. Marty Matlock, executive director of the University of Arkansas Office for Sustainability.  So, wait, are chickens about sustainability… or sustenance?  Tricky one, that…  #IPPEexpo
