Nov. 25-28, 2012. Smile! GNYDM is the Greater New York Dental Meeting — what else? Delegates were showing off their pearly whites at one of the largest Dental Congresses in the world, with well over 50,000 health care professionals looking over 1500 technical exhibits, and demonstrating the newest technology for the dental profession. There was a choice of full-day seminars, half-day seminars, essays, hands-on workshops, glass-enclosed and Live Patient Demonstration Area. Booth teams were there in force to demonstrate and teach visitors about new products and technology from around the world. They could touch, use and compare the newest materials and technology in dentistry today. Everyone said they attended the speeches to learn something; but actually they were just checking out the speakers’ caps and bridgework…
Sept. 10-15, 2012. Okay, try to say this with wads of cotton-wool stuffed in your cheeks: ”American Association of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons”. Not so easy, right? Nor is what they do. Turns out these people are the specialist surgeons who care for patients with problem wisdom teeth, facial pain, and misaligned jaws. They treat accident victims suffering facial injuries, place dental implants, care for patients with oral cancer, tumors and cysts of the jaws, and perform facial cosmetic surgery. Their advanced training in anesthesia allows them to provide quality care with maximum patient comfort and safety. AAOMS is the professional organization representing more than 9,000 oral and maxillofacial surgeons in the United States, and it supports its members’ ability to practice their specialty through education, research, and advocacy. Okay, take out the cotton wool, but you still have to say “American Association of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons” with a straight face…
May 24-27, 2012. The AAPD is the membership organization representing the healthcare specialty of Pediatric Dentistry. The Association’s 7,800 members serve as primary dental care providers for millions of children from infancy through adolescence. Delegates could visit the AAPD Bookstore to pick up a copy of the Coding Manual, the new Pediatric Dentistry Handbook, or a souvenir from this year’s Annual Session. (What kind of souvenirs appeal to dentists?). Many visitors spent some time in The Healthy Smiles, the Healthy Children Donor Lounge, to learn more about access to Care Grants, or to make a donation or increase their pledges to the Foundation. Who said a “trip to the dentists” wasn’t fun? You want the souvenir tooth-mug?
Open wide please… This won’t hurt too much… The SWDC 2011 (Southwest Dental Conference) is the premier regional dental conference in the Southwest, committed to education, emerging technology and service. There’s a program for the entire dental team: 3 non-stop days of lectures and workshops featuring over sixty dental clinicians from across the nation. If you think dentists are dedicated only to extraction (from patients’ mouths and pocketbooks), it’s significant that the event featured extensive discussion about pro bono work, a commitment by local dental practitioners. There’s also a whole lot of cosmetic dentistry going on, as in “making Dallas smile”. Okay, thank you, you can spit now…
