Orlando: NAA

April 14-17, 2013. The NAA is the Newspaper Association of America, and their conference goes by the name of NAA MediaXchange.  Some revolutionary ideas were tabled, such as “Newspapers should do away with the notion of circulation departments, and instead recast the divisions working to distribute and sell their products as audience development”.  There was a Youth Engagement Symposium, addressing the industry’s concern that young people have very little appetite for newspapers, or indeed news itself in the conventional sense, (leaving aside hot stories like Justin Bieber fans assaulting their idol on-stage).  “When it comes to engaging youth, being accessible and relevant are key”, we heard. “Most newspapers have already adapted to the new model of delivering news through digital and mobile platforms. Being in front of younger audiences is critical, but keeping them interested and providing them with pertinent information is not always easy”.  Oh look, a skate-boarding chipmunk…!

Anaheim: OFC 2013

March 19-21, 2013. The future of optical communication is here, said the banner over the registration desk.  The Optical Fiber Communication Conference and Exposition/National Fiber Optic Engineers Conference (OFC/NFOEC) featured more than 800 presentations, 550 exhibitors and 12,000 attendees from around the world. Hot topics covered in technical sessions and show floor panels included software-defined networks, silicon photonics, 100G/400G network design, cloud and data center networking.  In his keynote, ADVA Optical Networking CEO Brian Protiva gave a comprehensive look at the coming transformation of the network – from growth drivers and state of the industry to specific solutions needed to meet future challenges.  The Service Provider Summit addressed What Cloudonomics Means for the Network. Panels included Monetizing the Network, examining issues such as whether big data can help service providers in today’s economy.  This was no “optical illusion”…

Las Vegas: Channel Partners

February 28 – March 1, 2013. Channel Partners Telecom is, we hear, “the gathering point for the IT and Telecom Channel”.  As the Cloud, Data Center, WAN and Security take center stage in the business technology and communications space, VARs MSPs and Agents — about 30,000 of them in total –  converged at the Channel Partners event to get the scoop on IT and Telecom exhibitors, and to take in  more than 25 hours of education.  A Keynote roundtable asked “What Do Business Customers Want From Technology & Channel Partners?”  Meanwhile the main keynote, “Creating Business Value in the Cloud”, examined how the PC era is giving way to the cloud era. “That changes everything. All of the rules are turned upside down. Yesterday’s exceptions are today’s assumptions”, we were told. A training session on Application Integration in Action pointed out how traditional phone systems are like islands of technology,  functioning completely outside the key systems that run the business.  Some kind of wrong number?

Orlando: Graphics of the Americas (GOA)

February 21-23, 2013. Graphics of the Americas (GOA) is one of the printing industry’s largest annual combined exposition and education events in the U.S., we are informed.  It attracts an average audience of 9,800 printers, designers, and creative professionals from over 90 countries, with the USA accounting for a little less than two-thirds.  Attendees and exhibitors get to attend an event that addresses the needs of both end-users and printers, with a showcase for the convergence of knowledge, products and technology. It began as the premier venue for U.S. manufacturers and vendors to interface with the Latin American graphic arts market, a market that has burgeoned in the past decade.  Even today about 40% of show attendees come from Latin America.  GOA provides a world-class educational program with select English/Spanish bilingual sessions, and it also provides hands-on training labs and vendor tutorials, right on the show floor. What’s Spanish for “My printer cartridge needs replacing”…?

New York City: SpeechTEK

Aug. 13-15, 2012. SpeechTEK is the world’s biggest conference and exhibition dedicated exclusively to speech technology. Welcome to the global network of speech technology providers developing and implementing speech solutions.  This show was about customer interactions.  Topics addressed included Voice Interaction Design, Customer Experience, and Technology Advances. Attendees could concentrate on specific topics by going to virtual tracks—sequences of presentations devoted to topics such as multimodal applications, cross-channel applications, and speaker identification and verification. SpeechTEK 2012 was co-located with CRM Evolution, a content-rich program helping sales, marketing, and service professionals to bring their customer relationship efforts to the next level. Given the name of the show, SpeechTEK, it’s no surprise there were plenty of, well…. speeches.
