Fort Worth: AWT Conference

AWT is the Association of Water Technologies, and they deal in a product none of us can do without.  AWT focuses on helping members — that’s typically companies and suppliers who specialize in heat transfer in industrial and commercial processes and for comfort heating and cooling — to succeed in the water treatment industry. This year’s event was held at AT&T Stadium, home of the Dallas Cowboys, so delegates got to tour the stadium, walk the field, and celebrate the achievements of the recipients of the Ray Baum Memorial Water Technologist of the Year and the Supplier of the Year Awards.  Topics flowing through the event included “Legionella testing — dispelling myths and misinformation” and all the latest on heat-exchanger technology.  Do you have a boiler or cooling tower that needs service? Do you need a consultant to help you assess your situation? Do you need chemicals to treat a problem yourself?  Then you would have been up for “Tips for selecting a water treater”.  Why did the show go so well?  It’s something in the water…..   #AWTannual

During its deliberations, the Task Force consulted with more than 25 experts in special education, including representatives of higher education, key personnel in the U.S. and New Jersey Departments of Education, and special education advocates and practitioners.  So this was solid information, not just an “educated” guess…

San Diego: Direct Marketing Association – DMA

Marketing technology takes gigantic leaps forward every year, we heard.  The Direct Marketing Association pitched DMA 2014 as “the global event for data-driven marketers”.  Every customer journey is unique, we were told, and every touch point is an opportunity to leverage valuable data to nurture customer relationships, and deepen customer contact intimacy. Earvin “Magic” Johnson gave a keynoter, among more than 150 sessions over the course of six days, focusing on the modernization of marketing-centric technology and online/offline data management, predictive and prescriptive analytics.   The DMA2014 Exhibit Hall made it easy to discover the latest advances. The NeXtGen Arena and SoMoLo Pavilion were both places to find new and exciting technologies to add to the marketing mix.  Want to get the message across?  Be direct…!  #dma14

Philadelphia: American Association of Blood Banks – AABB Annual Meeting

The American Association of Blood Banks (AABB) is an international organization with members in 80 countries.  AABB has recently taken on a broader scope to include all of transfusion medicine as well as cellular therapies, specifically those based on hematopoietic stem cells.  The AABB works closely with the US Food and Drug Administration and provides technical input into the development of blood regulations for the USA, and virtually all major blood banks in the United States are accredited.  Speakers at the session described the recommendations of the AABB-CAP interorganizational work group on RHD genotyping, as well as the financial implications of expanding this genotyping. This time around AABB also added a hot topic session on Ebola and transfusion medicine to the Annual Meeting educational program.  The current Ebola outbreak is a major health concern, but other emerging infectious diseases like dengue required close monitoring as well, we heard.  Kind of a transfusion against confusion…  #aabb14
