VEGAS: International Association of Fairs and Expositions #IAFE

This one is an Expo about Expos, so to speak. IAFE is the International Association of Fairs and Expositions, so the organizers already know what they’re talking about. Over 3,200 fairs are held in North America each year. They provide industrial exhibits, demonstrations and competition aimed at the advancement of livestock, horticulture and agriculture with special emphasis placed on educational activities. This, we heard, is the largest event serving fairs, shows, exhibitions, and expositions. The 390-booth show is the biggest event in the fair industry’s calendar, with a total show attendance of over 4,000. Convention attendees learn from each other and from top professionals during the intensive four days of workshops, special seminars, round table discussions and social events. All the fun of the fair…

NYC: ChemShow 2013

This show was all about the latest chemical process technology. You know, the kind of equipment they had in the basement lab scenes in “Breaking Bad” on TV. But at this show the focus was on problem-solving face-to-face with the experts, and getting smarter in the complex world of ChemTech. A visit to the Process Control & Automation Center was an eye-opener for products and services geared to increase productivity and reduce costs in process operations. Product areas included Process Control Systems, Wireless Monitoring Devices, Data Collection, Instrumentation and Sensors, Transmitters and Software. Then there was the American Institute of Chemical Engineers (AIChE) program, which fielded leading industry experts presenting valuable insights and information specifically geared to engineers working in the chemicals, pharmaceuticals, food and other processing industries. The chemistry between delegates and speakers was palpable… #chemshow

GNYDM is the Greater New York Dental Meeting.  This meet is billed as the largest dental convention in the United States.  GNYDM attracted over 54,000 attendees from all 50 states and 130 foreign countries, so the turnout was something like 20,000 dentists.  There were over 1500 Technical Exhibits, demonstrating the newest technology for the dental profession, for instance a greatly expanded Implant Expo.  The educational program featured some of the most highly regarded educators in the field of dentistry. There was a choice of full-day seminars, half-day seminars, essays, hands-on workshops, glass-enclosed demos, and a Live Patient Demonstration Area which offered a sense of immediacy to even the most jaded dentist and staff.  Attendees could interact with over 600 exhibitors who enhanced the meeting, all there to demonstrate and teach delegates about new products and technology from around the world.  Visitors could touch, use and compare the newest materials and technologies used in dentistry today.  Quite a lot to get your teeth into…   #GNYDM

Vegas: Association for Career and Technical Education

ACTE, or The Association for Career and Technical Education, is the largest national education association dedicated to the advancement of education that prepares youth and adults for careers. ACTE was founded in 1926, ten years after the federal government began funding “vocational education” through the Smith-Hughes Act. Now, of course, it’s all about the internet. Online scorecards, infographics and other online tools are flourishing. One of the most recent entries is an infographic series created by the Office of Vocational and Adult Education for the nation as a whole and for all 50 states and DC. “Tapping the Potential: Profile of Adult Education Target Population” profiles use Census data to show the percentage of adults that lack a high school credential or English proficiency. ACTE aims to fix all that. CTE is getting much-warranted attention on Capitol Hill lately. Maybe ACTE can help legislators with their proficiency issues…. #careerteched

San Diego: California Schools Board Association – CSBA

“CSBA is the California Schools Board Association, and CSBA/AEC is CSBA’s premier continuing education program, “”the only leadership development opportunity that offers the governance perspective.”” We heard how the association is “”delivering practical solutions to help governance teams from districts and county education offices improve student learning and achievement””. Whether you were a veteran board member, a superintendent, a board support professional, or a first-time attendee, you found a conference filled with practical ideas. Whether you were focused on issues related to budget and finance, student achievement, governance, school safety, common core, community engagement, communication or collaboration, this premier event majored on key areas to guide governance teams through tough fiscal times. To prove how up-to-the-minute the proceedings were, there was a speech from Jane McGonigal, visionary game designer and futurist. No, she didn’t read palms….
