Indiana: WQA

April 2-5, 2013. WQA Aquatech USA was billed as the “water opportunity show”.  WQA Aquatech represents every segment in the increasingly complex and dynamic water treatment and supply market. This comprehensive water quality forum provided the latest information, tools, resources, and strategies, with emphasis on custom water applications from drinking, process, and wastewater, and featuring technologies such as RO, membranes, media, and everything in between.  Other supporting elements included pumps, tanks, valves, pipes, tubing, and other key products and services.  Those attending included Water Treatment Dealers, Engineers (application/process, design, project, specifying), Distributors, Resellers,  End Users, Assemblers, Plumbers and Regulatory bodies.  Why the general atmosphere of enthusiasm?  It must be something in the water…

Boston: NE Produce Expo

April 3, 2013. The New England Produce Council was the organization behind the NEPC Produce and Floral Expo.  The Council is a nonprofit trade association serving over 500 members. Members are involved in all sectors of the industry: distribution, production, foodservice, and retail of fresh fruits and vegetables. NEPC is also a member of the Produce Marketing Association.  Food safety was a major focus.  The food safety issue is an ongoing concern for consumers, we heard, and bacteria is the number one cause of food-related illness. While the way bacteria enters food can be complex, there are some simple measures that the industry can take in order to reduce those chances.  When a crisis arises, communication is the key. A plan of action is needed to reduce the level of uncertainty among employees and customers.  Hazard Analysis and Critical Control Point (HACCP) plans are prudent in daily food preparation and storage in any facility, whether it is at a wholesale or retail level. Maintaining the cold chain is a key to product safety and shelf life.  Food for thought…!

Paris: SITL

March 26-28, 2013. SITL in Paris was all about logistics solutions.  The show brought together all the products and innovative services dedicated to the supply, distribution and the supply chain of tomorrow for the benefit of the goods transportation and logistics services community. The expo offering was completed by Intralogistics, the exhibition for handling equipment in manufacturing and distribution held concurrently with SITL, and bringing together all handling equipment and automated systems which process and rationalize the physical movements of supply, production and distribution.  In total, 25,000 delegates poured through the doors.  Transport Intelligence published a unique new report on the European e-commerce market, which provided a comprehensive overview of the size of the market, recent trends and developments and profiles of key logistics providers and post offices that provide e-commerce services, as well as the supply chain operations of major retailers.  People seemed, well… transported…

Baltimore: ASPRS

March 24-28, 2013. We’re focused here on the American Society for Photogrammetry and Remote Sensing.  The ASPRS 2013 Annual Conference Exhibit Hall is comprised of over 60 of the world’s leading suppliers of Imaging and Geospatial systems and component manufacturers, operators and service companies. Exhibitors include airborne, and complementary sensor manufacturers, survey service companies, data processing, mapping, GIS and management specialists and the latest mobile and indoor mapping UAS.  This is a confluence or “coming together” of researchers and practitioners for the purpose of dialogue with respect to the most recent advances in geospatial analysis. The term “confluence” also has meaning in the assessment of the three earth’s spheres (hydrologic, terrestrial, and atmospheric) via remote sensing.  2013 promises to be an encouraging year, we heard, due to the successful launch of the LDCM Earth observing satellite January 2013. Stay tuned…

Las Vegas: ISS

April 3-5, 2013. ISS is the Inside Self-Storage World Expo, and there’s nothing like it in the world, we were reliably informed. The expo hall featured more than 100 exhibits, allowing visitors to explore and converse with suppliers in industry-dominating numbers.  The education program offered the up-to-date critical business information delegates needed to excel in today’s self-storage industry. The Education Tracks were organized based on categories regarding each of these markets: Building Blocks, International, Investor Essentials, Limiting Liability, Manager Essentials, Marketing and Owner Essentials.  One keynoter talked about adding space by building up instead of out, adding thoughts on when to consider climate-control storage, and how to capitalize on the immediate demand for boat and RV storage in waterside markets.  Another session addressed a wide range of issues pertaining to successful facility design, covering site selection, zoning issues, design options, costs, and construction do’s and don’ts.  All in all, quite a “store” of knowledge…

Beyond the trade show floor, ISA International Sign Academy education sessions offered insight into the latest developments in the signage industry.  With more than 550 exhibitors and 18,000 colleagues under one roof, there were ideas and products aplenty to make an immediate impact on display business goals.  There was a special focus on dynamic digital signage and how it is revolutionizing the signage marketplace.
